Reflecting on their artist residency experience ‘Simple Interactions’ in San Francisco’s Chinatown in October 2022, artists Andio Lai Chung-man and Tsang Hoi-yu are ready to tell their stories with their zines “Simply Folio” and “Sounds on Sounds”, that they created after returning to Hong Kong.

“Sounds on Sounds” by Tsang Hoi-yu is a set of 3 translucent cards, each with a research area set by the artist during her 3-week stay in San Francisco’s Chinatown. For “People”, Yu looked into how the residents of Chinatown defined themselves as part of their community, and their ways of describing themselves. For “Playing”, she recorded sounds that were sonically attractive to her during her discovery of Chinatown. And for “Playground”, Yu presented the 8 streets and 11 alleys in San Francisco’s Chinatown, highlighting different sounds she encountered there, in the form of a map. By stacking the 3 cards together, the sounds represented on each layer are compiled into the artist’s overall listening experience during her temporary stay in the neighborhood.
曾凱渝製作的《聲疊聲》是一冊由三張透明膠片組成的小誌，每張膠片代表藝術家在三藩市華埠駐留三星期期間的研究方向。曾凱渝在「人」的一頁展示了華埠居民如何定義自己，以及在一個社區的角色；在「錄音」一頁，以田野錄音的方式記錄了在華埠令她印象深刻的聲音；在「地圖」一頁，以地圖的方式展示她在三藩市華埠的八街十一巷發現的聲音。把以上三者拼合，聲音疊上聲音，就形成了曾凱渝在該社區短暫停留的聆聽經驗。

“pocket books of sound” is a series of three books published by soundpocket in 2021. With each book conceived by one artist (unit), the observations and thoughts on how they perceive sounds, and on how they imagine others perceive sounds are presented in the form of experiential books. The non-digital, handy and accessible books are to be circulated among all active listeners (to-be), who are curious about different fun ways in reading sounds.

“Shape with Things” by Wayne Choi & Joseph Yiu looks into people’s unconscious habits while listening. Wayne doodles when he is immersed in white noise, his drawings are “like an act of unconscious shaping, followed by mindful manipulations” as described by Joseph. The duo review Wayne’s drawings and writings created unconsciously while listening and assemble a collection in the pocket book that also invites readers to experience “the transformation from subconscious to ideation”.

“dok dat dap dap” by Hsu Wai-lun & So Lai-ping attempts to create a book which is accessible to the visually-impaired, the hearing-impaired and everyone else in the community. The two experiment with the possibility of recalling people’s listening experiences in the rain using different senses. Rain scenes from 17 films are portrayed with visual signs, onomatopoeia and the sense of touch in the pocket book.

“People pursue tube amplifier, listen to vinyl records, etc. The reason for these behaviors is that these equipment can produce sound with the feelings of ‘warmth’ and ‘truthfulness’. In fact such feelings come from the uneven shape of thorn-like ripples. Modern electric guitarists certainly understand this endless pursuit of the quality of sound: We can spend a lifetime to use different instruments as medium to search for the ideal ‘distortion’, ─ that is ‘caak3 seng1’ in Cantonese.” – Ahkok Wong
Ahkok Wong is a musician, author, and lecturer, and he used to live in an industrial building. He is also active in social movements. He has been a prolific writer, having published in local newspapers, magazines and digital media. “caak3 seng1” is a collection of selected articles that focuses on music, band ecology, communities in industrial areas and related government policies. Multiple engagements of Ahkok allow him to explore and comment on different issues, his incessant spirit of questioning offers readers ways to listen to Hong Kong ‘with temperature’.
“caak3 seng1” is the first publication in the series “sound by artists”, conceived by soundpocket. Artists with a practice in Hong Kong keep thinking and creating, and express their perception of the world through their own writing and their own voices. DAY AFTER翌日 [2014. 9.29 – 12.12] is a collective album of the sounds of Umbrella Movement. DAY AFTER presents the chronological order of the recordings from September 29 to December 12, that is, from the day after the police shot tear gas to the day after the clearance. This album began as a field recording investigative project initiated by The Library by soundpocket in January 2015. Aiming at collecting and preserving the first hand materials of the Umbrella Movement from the angle of‘sound, the investigation put together the sonic recordings and artists’ testimony about their listening experiences in a bona fide social movement.
DAY AFTER翌日[2014. 9.29 – 12.12] 是一張結集雨傘運動聲音的CD專輯。「翌日」是指雨傘運動開始以及結束之後的一天，即警察發放催淚彈到金鐘佔領區被清場後的一天;也就是這張專輯的第一段和最後一段錄音的日期。這張專輯起源於2015年1月，由「聲音圖書館」策劃的「雨傘運動-田野錄音調查」。調查以搜集和整理雨傘運動的一手聲音資料為目標，以「聲音」的角度，藝術家的聆聽經驗去理解和探討錄音。

About say, Listen
In the book Hong Kong Story, Siu See speaks of ordinary sounds in teahouses and the streets of Hong Kong fading away. Words can never replace sounds. But they may be able to generate conditions for some serious listening.
This collection of fiction and non-fiction writings intended for anyone who has ever wondered about listening. All contributing writers of say, Listen actively and critically listen. They listen with pleasure as much as in hardship. Over a span of three years, these traces of their listening made their way into this book: a writer listens to the gurgling water in the gutters; another listens to the politics silenced and sounded out, or to the memory of home, to distance, and to the inanimate – some dirt.
The publisher soundpocket is an organization working on the understanding and exploration of sound as art. As the second book in the series Pocket, say, Listen explores the relation between words, sounds, and graphic design on paper. The voices and hands of many who contribute to this book reminds one of how Dawn Williams, curator of the durational sound performance Strange Attractor in the Crawford Gallery (Cork, Ireland) speaks of listening, “of the endless possibilities, given a little time and space, that can enhance our relationship with the changing environments we inhabit by just listening.”

小思老師於《香港故事》談到〈市聲〉說家常話、難忘的市聲一去不返，「香港故事，竟然欠缺真切聲音，倒不如無聲了。」文字不能代替聲音，卻能造就某種真切的聆聽。
這本結集文學創作及個人經歷寫作的文集，適合所有對聆聽感到好奇的人閱讀。這裡是一些聽者的話語，從欣喜與困惑而來，有時也拒絕聆聽。三年來，這些聆聽的痕跡順著它們各自的軌跡溜進了這裡：一個作者聽著水槽裡潺潺的流水聲、另一位則聽著聲音的政治沉默過後又再鏗鏘作響、還有人聆聽有關家的記憶、距離，以至那些了無生氣的塵埃。

《Around 聽在》is the first book published by soundpocket, a registered charity
promotes sound art and its research and education in Hong Kong. The title of this
book is derived from Around sound art festival 2009 – a festival of listening and the
first of its kind in Hong Kong. Artists, curators, critics and musicians contribute 16
essays on listening in less noticed places in Hong Kong like Motat on Lamma Island,
empty public housing estates in Wong Chuk Hang, and listening to frogs and rivers,
listening to distance. The book includes a CD with 12 recordings of site-specific
works presented in the festival.
About Around sound art festival
Reaching its second year, Around sound art festival continues to highlight the
importance of listening in art. The title of the festival and the book “Around” is an
extension of the name “soundpocket”. They both emphasize comportment and
bearing, what lies around and makes them possible. The Chinese title of Around is
ting zai (Putonghua) and ting joi (Cantonese). It means both “listen at” or “listen in”,
and “listen to be”. When used as part of a phrase, ting joi designates the place and
time of listening, for instance, “ting joi Lamma” means to listen in Lamma, and “ting
joi 2009” means to listen in 2009. The broader meaning of “to be” is the human
horizon against which all listening activities are experienced and understood.

《Around 聽在》為本地聲音藝術慈善團體﹣聲音掏腰包(soundpocket) 首度出版的刊物。本書的名字由《聽在》聲音藝術節而來。藝術家、策展人、藝評人及音樂家等獻上十六篇文章，內容包括：在南丫島模達灣及空置的黃竹坑公共屋邨的聆聽經驗、聆聽青蛙與河流、及聆聽距離等。書本內附CD一張，十二段錄音為藝術節部分作品選段。
關於《聽在》聲音藝術節
進入第二年，《聽在》聲音藝術節繼續強調「聆聽」在藝術之中的重要性。書本及藝術節名字「聽在」為聲音掏腰包的延續，它同樣地强調一種方位，以及還繞它、讓它可能的種種。聽在，也可解作處於某時某地的聆聽，例如聽在南丫，抽像一點，也可以說聽在音樂，有如沐浴於音樂中；或者聽在2009年。
「在」字本身也有存在的意思，也是所有聆聽經驗之可能存在的領域。

The game accommodates 6 to 10 players, each in their randomly selected roles, to work cooperatively to design and develop their “Dream City”. This is a creative teaching tool for parents, teachers and youth workers to introduce to youngsters what development is and the poverty-related issues that urban development might bring about.
遊戲適合6至10人參與，玩家將透過扮演不同角色參與社區的規劃及發展，適合家長、教師及青年工作者用作教材，跟青少年一同探討社區發展及發展背後可能引發的跟貧窮相關之議題。
