Let’s breathe – The Listening Academy 2024 in Hong Kong

As part of the The Listening Biennial founded by Brandon Labelle in 2021 in collaboration with Israel Martinez, Budhaditya Chattopadhyay, and Yang Yeung, The Listening Academy is an independent research academy focusing on listening as a philosophical, artistic, social and somatic issue. This entails a relation to sonic, performative and ecological practices, sound studies research, and experimental pedagogy. The Academy offers a generative and nurturing framework for researchers and practitioners to engage in collaborative exchange and the sharing of knowledge, as well as workshopping new directions in sound studies and related issues and practices. This includes bringing together individual approaches and work, and creating opportunities for material exploration and building new collaborations.

The Listening Academy 2024 will be held from 3 – 7 November, 2024. It is a one-week sound art programme that is unprecedented in Hong Kong. 12 internationally renowned sound, visual, media and performance artists, writers, researchers and curators from Australia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Taiwan, UK, and US, will present a series of parallel situations, including symposia for research sharing, walkshops for field work and recordings, and creative and explorative gatherings with equivalent number of local artists in multiple venues and outdoor public space in Hong Kong.

Stay tuned for the programme details available in October.
